 Burning Permit Information

REQUIREMENTS FOR OPEN AIR BURNING PERMITS
 

All burning permits holders must call the Granby Fire Department the day of the burn to activate the permit.

Chapter 1031 of the Acts of 1973 authorizes open burning of certain materials during the period to include January 15 to May 1 which would otherwise be prohibited by the provisions of the Air Pollution Regulations.

Materials Include:  Tree branches, brush, cane, drfitwood and forestry debris.

The Pioneer Valley Air Pollution Control District  has interpreted that the intent of the legislation is to provide for open burning associated with domestic tree trimming, pruning and garden preparation.

  • Open air burning is allowed between the hours of 10 AM and 4 PM.
  • Materials shall not be piled to exceed a height of three (3) feet, a width of ten (10) feet, and a length of ten (10) feet.
  • No burning within 75 feet of a dwelling.
  • Person setting the fire shall have sufficient help present to control the fire.
  • The permit shall be shown to any person who may request it.
  • The permit is valid for the fire and the date mentioned.  It is a violation of the law to use it for any other purpose.
  • The permit does not release the party from any liability for damages.
  • In case of heavy winds or otherwise dangerous conditions, the permit is invalid, as provided by law.
  • All permits may be subject to inspection prior to and during the burning for compliance.
  • Burning associated with commercial land clearing for building site development is prohibited.
  • The statute specifically prohibits open air burning of grass, hay, leaves, whole trees and stumps.
  • Whoever violats any of these provisions may be subjected to a fine of not more than $500 plus the cost of supression or by imprisonment for not more than one month or both.

Recruitment Information

The Granby Fire Department (GFD) is currently recruiting individuals who wish to serve the town of Granby in the capacity of Firefighter and/or Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) at all levels.

Those persons who do not have the desire to participate in emergency activities, or who do not meet the physical requirements are also encouraged to enter the department.  These members contribute in the areas of fundraising, public relations, public education, administrative assistance or other fire-ground related duties. 


Basic Requirements

The minimum requirements to become a call member with the GFD:

  • Must be at least 18 years old
  • Valid Massachusetts drives license
  • Background check
  • Clearance by physician
  • For EMT’s – must possess current certification or be enrolled in MA OEMS program
 
Time Commitment & Training Requirements
  • Two department training sessions per month
  • Occasional Saturday training
  • Respond when available
  • Participate in department and community activities
  • Firefighters will be required to attend one of two possible Firefighter programs. These classes are held some weekday evenings and some weekend days.

Our members come from a wide range of backgrounds and bring many skills and experience to the department.
